The 5 weeks following Thanksgiving is the most active shopping time of the year. Unfortunately, it is also the most active time for criminals. You are more at risk during this time for being robbed, car jacked, identity stolen, or worse than at any other time of the year.
So what can you do about it? The best thing you can do is make yourself less of a target. Criminals look for the easiest target. We compare them to lions. While the lion is the king of the beasts and can take down almost any foe, it looks for the weakest, the youngest or oldest, the injured, the slowest, the one least likely to be able to defend themself. Criminals do the same. If you understand that, you can make yourself less of a target.
The first thing you need to do is to only go shopping during the day or to places that are well lit, have a lot of other people around, and preferably have visible security. We strongly recommend even with good lighting not to go late at night.
The next thing you do, and this may be the most important thing, is be aware of your surroundings! We talk about different levels of awareness. This starts at White and goes to Red. White level is you are not paying any attention to what is going on around you. Red is when you are in an actual fight with an attacker. Similar to the White level of awareness is the “Facebook Level” of awareness. That’s when you walk through the parking lot paying attention to your phone and what is coming through on Facebook or text and you have no idea what is happening around you. Instead, you should be looking around, head up, evaluating the other people walking through the parking lot. Is someone following you? Is there someone in the next row over that is keeping pace with you? Is someone standing near your car? If this is the case, turn around and walk back into the store. If they continue to follow you, talk to the store security. Do not put yourself in that situation where it is just you and a potential attacker.
Finally, if you do find yourself in a situation where you are not able to escape an attacker, you MUST FIGHT as if your life depends on it…because it may! Again, criminals are looking for easy prey. If you fight hard or run, the odds are they will leave you alone and look for someone else.
If you want to learn more about the best way to fight off an attacker, we have great classes and seminars that can teach you how to defend yourself even if you have had no prior martial arts or self-defense training.
