I've been working with and talking to local various people about setting up a free or low cost WiFi network to cover downtown Griffin as well as the northern shopping corridor.

Other cities our size have tried to do it through public means, but many have failed. Some have succeeded though and there are many privately owned networks that seem to be doing well.

Keys for success (as I see them):
Coverage - needs to work and be available where ever people work and play.
Low cost - Verizon cards are 60/month, many hotels charge 9-15/day for access - I'm thinking of something like free for XX minutes, a daily charge, and an inexpensive monthly charge.

If there was stable fast wireless available throughout downtown and at walmart, movie theater, belk shopping center, kroger shopping center - all available for a low monthly fee, would that be something people would use?

How many people can already check email or go online through their phones, even without wifi? I know that I can do so with the iPhone's 3G network, regardless of whether there is wifi available or not. Where I do need wifi is when I have to send files, and I'm away from home. A lot of restaurants have their own free wifi (sometimes you have to ask for the password), and it seems to me that those places are where people would most likely want to bring their laptops to work, surf, or check their email.

Great idea, but I wouldn't be willing to pay a monthly fee or pay a tax for it. My Touch is great and I often check email when I'm in a wifi place, but staying in constant contact for me is unnecessary. It can wait until I get home.
